  1. Condition caused by a shortage of 
  2. haemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying component of
  3. red blood cells. The main symptoms are
  4. fatigue, pallor, breathlessness,
  5. palpitations, and poor resistance to
  6. infection. Treatment depends on the cause.
  7. Anemia arises either from abnormal loss or
  8. defective production of haemoglobin.
  9. Excessive loss occurs, for instance, with
  10. chronic slow bleeding or with accelerated
  11. destruction or haemolysis, of red blood
  12. cells. Defective production may be due to
  13. iron deficiency or malnutrition, certain
  14. blood diseases (sickle-cell disease and
  15. thalassemia), chronic infection, kidney
  16. disease, or certain kinds of poisoning.
  17. Untreated anaemia taxes the heart and may
  18. prove fatal.
